Objetivo: A proposta deste estudo foi traduzir e adaptar transculturalmente o Teste de Rastreamento Western Aphasia Battery - Revised (WAB-R), colaborando para futura aplicação do instrumento em adultos brasileiros. Métodos: O roteiro de adaptação foi baseado na perspectiva universalista. As etapas de equivalência conceitual e de itens, semântica e operacional foram cumpridas rigorosamente, chegando-se a uma versão síntese usada no pré-teste. Participaram do estudo 30 indivíduos, dos 18 aos 89 anos, todos apresentando o Português Brasileiro como primeira língua. No entanto, apenas 28 voluntários preencheram os critérios de inclusão na pesquisa. Dois participantes foram excluídos, porque apresentaram pontuação baixa no Mini-Exame do Estado Mental, e foram encaminhados para avaliação geriátrica. Resultados: A versão síntese do Teste de Rastreamento WAB-R, usada no pré-teste, permitiu observar o comportamento e a linguagem dos sujeitos em interações, coletar impressões do quadro geral de comunicação e quantificar a habilidade comunicativa de acordo com o cálculo do quociente de afasia e do quociente de linguagem, com parâmetros do instrumento original. Conclusão: Ao se adaptar um instrumento, é importante manter suas características originais. Contudo, as propriedades de medidas podem não estar de acordo com as propriedades psicométricas da cultura brasileira. Sendo assim, propõe-se a análise da confiabilidade e validação no cenário brasileiro, que ocorrerão na equivalência de mensuração e funcional.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the Western Aphasia Battery - Revised (WAB-R) screening test, thus contributing to future applications of the instrument with Brazilian adults. Methods: The adaptation was based on a universalist perspective. The steps for conceptual, item, semantic and operational equivalence were strictly followed, resulting in a short version used in the pretest. The study participants were 30 individuals, between 18 to 89 years old; all were Brazilian speakers, with Portuguese as their first language. However, only 28 volunteers met the criteria for inclusion in the study. Two participants were excluded because they had low scores on the mini-mental state examination and were referred to geriatric assessment. Results: The short version of the WAB-R screening test, used in the pretest, allowed us to observe the behavior and language of the individuals during interactions, to collect impressions of overall communication, and to quantify communication ability by calculating the aphasia quotient and the language quotient, according to parameters of the original instrument. Conclusion: When adapting an instrument, it is important to maintain its original characteristics. However, the properties of measurement may not be in accordance with the psychometric properties of Brazilian culture. Therefore, we propose further analyses of the reliability and validation of the instrument in question in Brazil, which will occur by means of measurement and functional equivalence.

OBJETIVO: Obter dados locais na região metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro sobre o conhecimento ou a percepção do profissional de educação sobre os sinais indicativos de discalculia. MÉTODOS: Foi elaborado e aplicado a 63 professores do ensino fundamental das redes de ensino pública e particular, um questionário com 18 perguntas específicas sobre discalculia, sendo duas perguntas abertas e 16 fechadas. As perguntas abordavam a presença do tema na formação, experiência profissional, conhecimento específico e propostas de estratégias pedagógicas para a discalculia. RESULTADOS: Quarenta e cinco vírgula dois por cento dos professores informaram desconhecer o quadro de discalculia. Apenas 12,9% consideraram-se capazes de identificar um caso de suspeita de discalculia. CONCLUSÃO: De acordo com os resultados obtidos, os professores possuem pouco conhecimento específico sobre a discalculia e se mostram inseguros da sua capacidade de identificar um caso suspeito.

PURPOSE: To obtain local data in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro on the knowledge and perception of educators of signs indicative of dyscalculia. METHODS: A questionnaire with 18 questions (two open questions and sixteen closed questions) was presented to primary school teachers of public and private schools. The questions were related to the occurrence of the topic of dyscalculia during their education as a teacher, their professional experience, specific knowledge about dyscalculia, and strategies to be used in the classroom. RESULTS: Forty five point two percent reported not to know what dyscalculia is. Only 12.9% believed they can identify signs of dyscalculia. CONCLUSION: The participants have little specific knowledge about dyscalculia and showed to be insecure with respect to their ability to identify possible cases of dyscalculia.

OBJETIVO: Investigar as habilidades de consciência fonológica e memória de trabalho, bem como a sua influência no processo de alfabetização em um grupo de crianças intelectualmente normais. MÉTODOS: Participaram desta pesquisa 40 crianças de 7 anos e 6 meses a 8 anos, intelectualmente normais, dos segundo e terceiro anos do ensino fundamental. Estas foram organizadas em dois grupos com 20 cada, sendo um com dificuldade na alfabetização, e outro sem alterações nesse processo. Esses participantes foram submetidos ao teste RAVEN do quociente de inteligência, à avaliação audiométrica, ao teste de Consciência Fonológica - Instrumento de Avaliação Sequencial, à prova escrita de ditado e ao teste de memória de trabalho. RESULTADOS: Os indivíduos que se encontram na fase alfabética apresentaram bom desenvolvimento da consciência fonológica e 85% deles, elevado desempenho da memória de trabalho. As crianças na fase silábico-alfabética apresentaram alterações na consciência fonológica e 91,6% delas mostraram um mediano desempenho da memória de trabalho. Os sujeitos que se encontram nas fases silábica e pré-silábica tiveram mais dificuldades na consciência fonológica do que aqueles na silábico-alfabética, e obtiveram um baixo desempenho da memória de trabalho. Houve diferença entre as médias dos grupos para os testes CONFIAS e memória de trabalho (p<0,0001). Houve uma correlação também significativa, r=0,78, com p=0,01, entre as habilidades de consciência fonológica e memória de trabalho para o total de sujeitos da amostra. CONCLUSÕES: Verificou-se que, na medida em que os níveis de consciência fonológica e memória de trabalho se elevam, a fase de alfabetização da criança também avança, sendo, portanto, medidas diretamente proporcionais.

PURPOSE: To investigate phonological awareness and working memory skills as well as their influence on the literacy process in a group of intellectually normal children. METHODS: Forty intellectually normal children (7.6-8.0 years) from the second and third grades of elementary school participated. Children were organized in two groups (20 children each): one with and another without literacy difficulties. These participants underwent RAVEN's intelligence quotient test, audiometric assessment, CONFIAS test of phonological awareness, written spelling task, and working memory test. RESULTS: Children in the alphabetic phase presented a good development of phonological awareness, and 85% of them showed a high-performance working memory. Children in the syllabic-alphabetic phase had changes in phonological awareness, and 91.6% of them showed an average working memory performance. The subjects at pre-syllabic and syllabic phases demonstrated more difficulties in phonological awareness than those at syllabic-alphabetic and had a poor working memory performance. Between-group differences were observed for CONFIAS and working memory tests (p<0.0001). There was also a significant correlation (r=0.78, p=0.01) between the skills of phonological awareness and working memory for the total sample of individuals. CONCLUSIONS: Based on these results, it was found that as phonological awareness and working memory levels increased, the literacy phase also advanced, therefore showing that these are directly proportional measures.

OBJETIVO: investigar as habilidades pragmáticas em sujeitos com Síndrome de Down e sua influência no uso comunicativo. MÉTODOS: avaliação da pragmática (ABFW). Participaram desta pesquisa 10 crianças e adolescentes, de ambos os sexos, com idades entre sete e treze anos. A coleta de dados foi realizada a partir de uma situação de brincadeira livre com um familiar. Os padrões de comportamento foram analisados por meio das funções comunicativas, dos meios de comunicação (vocal, gestual ou verbal) e dos atos comunicativos. Os resultados foram tratados estatisticamente (p < 0.05 Kruskal-Wallis; Q1 = n/4 Q2 = n/2 Q3 =3n/4 (n = 10) Primeiro Quartil, Mediana, Terceiro Quartil. RESULTADOS: foram realizados em média 2.88 atos comunicativos por minuto. Entre as funções comunicativas as de maior frequência foram a comentário e a narrativa. O meio comunicativo de maior frequência foi o verbal. Todos os participantes utilizaram as funções comunicativas: comentário, reconhecimento do outro e jogo compartilhado e 90% do direcionamento da comunicação foi realizado pelas crianças e adolescentes. CONCLUSÃO: os meios comunicativos verbal e gestual foram os mais utilizados pelos participantes do estudo. Em relação às funções comunicativas observou-se a predominância da função comentário e narrativa. O direcionamento da comunicação foi realizado predominantemente pelas crianças e adolescentes participantes do estudo.

PURPOSE: to investigate the pragmatic abilities and their influence on the communicative use in subjects with Down's syndrome. METHODS: the pragmatic assessment (ABFW). The participants were 10 children and adolescents, male and female, from seven to 13-year old. The behavior patterns were analyzed by using the communicative functions, the communication means (vocal, gestural or verbal) and the communicative acts. Data collection was provided from a free play situation with a family member. The Kruskal Wallis test was used for statistic analysis (p < 0.05 Q1 = n/4 Q2 = n/2 Q3 =3n/4 (n = 10) First Quartile, Median, Third Quartile). RESULTS: the median of the communicative acts was 2.88. The comment and narrative functions were the more frequent among the communicative functions and the verbal was the more frequent communicative mean. All the participants used the functions: comment, recognitions of the other and game shared functions. The children and adolescents were responsible for 90% of the direction of the communication. CONCLUSION: the verbal and gestural communication means and the comment and narrative functions were the most used among the participants; mothers were responsible for just 10% of the communication direction and it was carried out predominantly by the children and adolescents that took part in the study.

OBJETIVO: O presente estudo teve como objetivo verificar o uso dos processos fonológicos em uma população de crianças com desenvolvimento fonológico normal. MÉTODOS: Fizeram parte da pesquisa 240 crianças, de ambos os sexos, com idades entre três e oito anos. Foram realizadas análises relativas aos processos fonológicos e os dados foram comparados em relação à faixa etária e sexo. RESULTADOS: A análise dos resultados permitiu concluir que aos três, quatro e cinco anos os processos de redução de encontro consonantal, lateralização e apagamento de consoante final foram os mais utilizados. A metátese foi o segundo processo mais utilizado na faixa etária de seis anos, aparecendo em terceiro lugar na faixa etária de sete anos. Em relação ao número de processos fonológicos utilizados por faixa etária, aos três anos de idade as crianças utilizaram um mínimo de dois processos e a partir da faixa etária de quatro anos o número mínimo de processos fonológicos utilizados foi zero e o número máximo diminuiu gradativamente de acordo com o aumento da faixa etária, assim como a média. Em relação à variável sexo, não foi observada nenhuma diferença estatisticamente significante em nenhuma das análises realizadas nesta pesquisa. CONCLUSÕES: Os dados encontrados nesta pesquisa evidenciam a dificuldade encontrada pelas crianças na produção das líquidas e nas estruturas silábicas mais complexas.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to verify the use of phonological processes in a group of children with normal phonological development. METHODS: The participants were 240 children of both genders, aged between three and eight years. Analyses regarding phonological processes were carried out, and the data were compared considering age and gender. RESULTS: The results allowed the conclusion that at the ages of three, four and five years the most frequently used processes were cluster reduction, lateralization, and final consonant deletion. Metathesis was the second most frequently used process at the age of six, and the third at the age of seven. Concerning the number of phonological processes used at each age range, three-year-old children used at least two processes, and from the age of four onward the minimum number of processes dropped to zero, while the maximum number and the mean number of processes gradually decreased with increasing age. Regarding gender, not a single significant difference was found for any of the analyses performed in the current study. CONCLUSIONS: The data obtained in this study evidenced the difficulties found by normally developing children in the production of liquid phonemes and complex syllabic structures.

OBJETIVO: investigar a aquisição fonológica em uma população de crianças com desenvolvimento normal. MÉTODOS: foram avaliadas 240 crianças, de ambos os sexos, com idades entre três e oito anos. Foram realizadas análises relativas ao inventário fonético e percentual de consoantes corretas. Os dados foram analisados em relação à faixa etária e sexo. RESULTADOS: aos três anos de idade os fonemas /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/, /m/, e /n/ já estão adquiridos e estabilizados no sistema fonológico das crianças. Os fonemas /f/, /v/, /s/, /ʃ/,/z/, /ʒ/, /ʎ/e/ɲ/ e as africadas [tʃ]e[dʒ]também são adquiridos nesta faixa etária apesar de ter sido encontrada uma grande variabilidade de produção entre as crianças. A aquisição do fonema /ɾ/ ocorre inicialmente na posição de onset simples (quatro anos) e posteriormente na posição de onset complexo (cinco anos), a aquisição do fonema /l/ em onset simples ocorre aos três anos e em onset complexo aos quatro anos e o fonema /R/ em onset simples é adquirido na faixa etária de três anos e na posição de coda aos quatro anos. CONCLUSÃO: desde a faixa etária de três anos, muitas crianças possuem o inventário fonético completo havendo, porém, uma grande variabilidade entre as crianças. Com relação ao PCC e ao PCC-R, concluiu-se que a média do percentual de consoantes corretas tem um crescimento significativo e gradual de acordo com o aumento da faixa etária. Em relação à variável sexo, não foi observada nenhuma diferença estatisticamente significante em nenhuma das análises realizadas nesta pesquisa.

PURPOSE: to investigate phonological acquisition in population of children with normal development. METHODS: the participants of this study were 240 children of both genders, between 3 and 8-year old. Data were analyzed with respect to age and gender. RESULTS: the results allow to conclude that at the age of 3 the phonemes /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/, /m/, and /n/ are already acquired and stabilized in the phonological system of the children. Also the phonemes /f/, /v/, /s/, /ʃ/, /z/, /ʒ/, /ʎ/ and /ɲ/ and the affricates [tʃ]e[dʒ] are already acquired at that age although we found a great production variability between children. The acquisition of the phoneme /ɾ/ occurs initially in simple onset (age 4) and afterwards in complex onset (age 5), the acquisition of the phoneme /l/ in simple onset occurs at age 3 and in complex onset at age 4 and the phoneme /R/ in simple onset is acquired at age of 3 and in final position at the age of 4. CONCLUSION: as for the total number of phonemes acquired, it can be concluded that from the age of 3 many children have a complete phonetic inventory, there is a great variability among children. As far as PCC and PCC-R is concerned, the mean percentage of correct consonants increases significantly and gradually while age increases. With regard to gender, not a single significant difference was found for any of the analyses performed in the current study.

OBJETIVO: caracterizar o tipo de consistência alimentar e a articulação da fala em crianças com oclusão normal e com apinhamento dentário, verificando-se possíveis correlações e interferências. MÉTODOS: participaram 60 crianças, de ambos os sexos, entre 7 e 12 anos, divididas em dois grupos. G1: 30 crianças com apinhamento dentário, G2: 30 crianças sem apinhamento dentário, conforme avaliação odontológica. Foram critérios de exclusão: déficits neurológicos e cognitivos, presença de hábitos orais, respiração oral crônica, deformações dentofaciais, realização de tratamento ortopédico/ortodôntico e/ou fonoaudiológico. Foram realizadas: avaliação do sistema estomatognático; avaliação odontológica quanto à situação dento-oclusal; aplicação de questionários aos pais visando contemplar critérios de exclusão e definir os hábitos alimentares quanto à sua consistência; avaliação de fala quanto à produção fonética e fonológica. RESULTADOS: crianças sem apinhamento dentário têm alimentação predominantemente dura, enquanto aquelas com apinhamento dentário têm alimentação predominantemente amolecida; caracterizada principalmente pelo hábito de ingestão de líquido na presença do alimento na boca. Quanto à fala, não foram encontradas alterações significativas independente do apinhamento dentário e do tipo de consistência alimentar. CONCLUSÃO: há indícios de que a presença do apinhamento dentário relaciona-se à consistência alimentar. A alimentação amolecida parece constituir provável fator etiológico ou contribuinte à existência do apinhamento dentário. O tipo de alimentação e a presença de apinhamento dentário parecem não interferir na articulação da fala.

PURPOSE: to characterize the kind of food consistence and speech production in children with normal occlusion and malocclusion related to tooth crowding, as well as to verify possible correlations and interferences. METHODS: sixty children from 7 to 12 years old, both genders, divided in two groups: (G1) formed by thirty children with tooth crowding and (G2), the control group, formed by thirty children without tooth crowding. Exclusion criteria: neurological or cognitive problems, oral habits, mouth breathing, dento-facial deformities, orthodontic or speech and language treatment. The procedures were: oral myofunctional and speech evaluation, dentistry evaluation and the appliance of two questionnaires to the children's parents about the child's history and nutrition habits regarding the food consistence. RESULTS: children without tooth crowding usually eat mainly solid food, while those with a crowding arch usually eat softened food, mostly influenced by the habit of drinking while the food is still in the mouth. CONCLUSION: it seems that tooth crowding is related to food consistence. The soften food consistence seems to be an etiological factor or to contribute to tooth crowding. Food consistence as well as tooth crowding seems not to interfere in speech production.

TEMA: a realimentação auditiva atrasada (RAA) é ao que parece, uma técnica que tem sido utilizada no tratamento da gagueira com bons resultados. Muitos aparelhos de RAA são comercializados. No entanto, nem todas as pessoas que gaguejam experimentam melhora na fluência da fala ao utilizar a RAA e quando os efeitos são positivos observam-se diferenças consideráveis em relação ao grau e às condições em que a melhora na fala ocorreu. Neste sentido, a decisão de utilizar ou não a RAA no tratamento de um cliente nem sempre é óbvia. OBJETIVO: o presente artigo se propõe a discutir e ilustrar fatores a serem considerados, no que se refere à utilização da RAA em terapia individual, com base em uma revisão de literatura. Quatro tipos de fatores são apresentados: fatores inerentes ao cliente, tais como sexo, idade, severidade de gagueira, tipologia da disfluência, origem da gagueira e tipo biológico; fatores externos ao cliente, como o tempo de retorno da informação auditiva, intensidade, modo de apresentação, modalidade e situação de fala; possíveis efeitos colaterais como redução da velocidade de fala, aumento da freqüência fundamental e da intensidade vocal, prolongamento de vogais e um possível efeito na naturalidade fala; outros fatores como questões estéticas, questões financeiras e duração do efeito na fala. CONCLUSÃO: a revisão aponta a influência de fatores múltiplos, mas com os dados existentes é difícil predizer se o indivíduo será ou não beneficiado pelo uso da RAA. Em suma, além das evidências em relação à influência de diferentes fatores serem ainda pobres, alguns estudos apresentam dados de pouca qualidade que não podem ser considerados "evidência".

BACKGROUND: there is some indication that the use of delayed auditory feedback (DAF) is a potentially helpful technique in the treatment of stuttering. Several devices for DAF are also commercially. However, not all individuals who stutter experience a positive effect on speech fluency when speaking under DAF. And those who do show a positive effect, may differ considerably as to the degree and the conditions in which the effect is seen. Therefore, the decision whether or not to attempt the use of DAF in an given client is usually not straightforward. AIM: starting from a literature review, the present paper discusses and illustrates factors to take into account when considering the use of RAA in an individual client. Four types of factors are distinguished: factors inherent to the client such as gender, age, stuttering severity, dysfluency pattern, origin of stuttering, and biological subtype; factors outside the client including delay time, intensity, manner of delivery, speech mode, and speech situation; possible side-effects like a reduction in speech rate, an increase of speaking fundamental frequency and vocal intensity, lengthening of vowels, and a possible effect on speech naturalness; others namely cosmetics, finances, and the long-term effect. CONCLUSION: the review shows that most likely multiple factors play a role, but with the currently available data it is very hard to predict whether a given individual will or will not benefit from the use of DAF. Overall, the evidence for the influence of the different factors is still meager. Moreover, some studies present data of a quality that can hardly be considered "evidence".
